Types Of Hauntings
Most people believe that a haunting involves the ghost or spirit of someone who has passed away, but that’s not always the case. Ghosts can be responsible for the paranormal activity that takes place at a specific location, but there are other types of hauntings as well. Paranormal investigators understand the different levels of hauntings and they use special equipment and various methods to determine which type is taking place at the location they are investigating.
A residual haunting is perhaps the most common type of haunt people experience. It involves energy that is imprinted on a specific location; typically the result of a traumatic or highly emotional event that took place. There is no spirit present, just the energy.
A residual ghost repeats the same pattern over and over again, like a movie clip that is on a constant loop. They cannot interact with the living because they’re not really there at all – they’re just energy from a past event.
A classic example of a residual haunt is the battleground at Gettysburg, PA. People often claim to see Civil War era soldiers marching in formation on the battlefield. The battle at Gettysburg was extremely traumatic and highly charged and the energy that resulted from the events that took place are permanently imprinted on the location.
A residual haunting will continue to take place whether people are there to witness it or not, and there is nothing that can be done to stop it. Although it may be unsettling to people who are experiencing this type of haunt, the key thing to remember is that it is an imprint of energy and not something that will cause harm.
In this type of haunting, the spirits or entities are aware of themselves and their surroundings. They have the ability to interact with the living and can move about a location as they please. They are often referred to as earthbound spirits, although it is not fully understood why they have chosen to stay. Some believe they have unfinished business or that the spirits don’t fully accept that they’re dead. Other reasons may include an attachment to a physical object or they’re protecting a home that was once theirs. Whatever the case may be, more times than not they don’t want to leave.
Intelligent ghosts will try to get the attention of the living by touching people, moving objects, slamming doors, or making other types of noises. They can appear as orbs or an apparition that either looks like a mist or takes on the form of a human. The spirits can answer direct questions, although many times the answers cannot be heard by human ears. This is why paranormal investigators use recording devices and conduct EVP sessions.
These entities can be benevolent and simply need or want interaction with the living, or they can be mischievous. How they behave really depends on why they’re haunting a specific location. They are more active at night because it requires less energy to manifest in darkness than in daylight. They also have the ability to draw energy from their surroundings and it’s not uncommon for paranormal investigators to have brand new batteries in their equipment drained completely within seconds.
It’s not easy to get rid of intelligent spirits, however, many people have learned to cohabitate with them peacefully. The spirits were once human themselves and are not necessarily evil, so treating them with respect and reasoning with them may be your only option if you plan to continue living in the same location with them.
The word “poltergeist” is derived from the German words “poltern” and “geist.” Poltern means “to make sound” and geist means “ghost.” So the word poltergeist literally means “noisy ghost.”
In some cases, poltergeist activity may not actually have anything to do with ghosts at all. One theory is that living person, typically a teenage girl, is the cause of the activity. High stress levels, extreme emotions, or even repressed anger can cause a person to subconsciously create poltergeist activity.
The activity usually centers around the person that is causing it and is more prominent when that person is present. It can be something as simple as knocks and bangs in the beginning and then become more intense, such as furniture moving around on its own.
Other instances of poltergeist activity do involve spirits, and often more than one. They can band together and combine their energy to cause more intense activity. The activity may be a result of anger on their part and to resolve the situation, you may need to try and find the root of their problem and help them move on.
In many cases, poltergeist activity will start suddenly and end just as quickly. In other cases it may take longer; sometimes weeks, months, and even years. If the activity is being caused by a person, it can be easier to handle because you are able to get help or counseling for the person involved. On the other hand, if the activity is being caused by spirits, you may never fully understand why it started.
Fortunately, this type of haunting is rare, but it should not be taken lightly. The type of entities involved in this haunt are inhuman spirits, meaning they have never been human at any time. They are often called demons and their primary goal is to possess a person by breaking the person’s will.
Another fortunate aspect of a demonic haunting is as long as the demon is not in hiding, they are quite easy to identify. Even though they can appear in any form they want, when they do manifest, they often take on a semi-human form; typically half man and half animal. They also give off a very nasty stench, which is one of the first clues that you are dealing with a demon.
Demons emit angry growls that can sound like they’re coming from every corner of the room. They are active during the day and night and are extremely strong. These entities have been known to hit, punch, scratch, and in some cases even hurl people across a room. They can go anywhere they want, any time they want. They may look human one minute and then take on a completely different form the next. When they are present, the air in the room will become noticeably thicker and temperatures will fluctuate.
Inhuman spirits cannot be destroyed, but they can be forced to leave a location through blessings and religious rituals performed by experienced individuals. Under no circumstances should you attempt to deal with a demonic entity on your own. If you suspect you have a demon in your home, contact a paranormal group immediately.
